Everlasting God

Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the

Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his

understanding is unsearchable. (Isaiah 40:28)

It might make your head hurt to think long about what it means that God is
everlasting.

It’s hard enough to project our own existence into eternity future, but we had a
beginning. God is “from everlasting” (Psalm 93:2; Habakkuk 1:12), as Psalm 90:2
celebrates what is echoed in several other places (1 Chronicles 16:36; Nehemiah 9:5;
Psalm 41:13; 90:2; 106:48), “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you
had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.”

It is an amazing truth that our God is everlasting. He had no beginning, and his strength
and vigor will never wane. It’s not just mindboggling that he is everlasting, but it can be
deeply comforting, and can help us feel a great sense of security when we’re in good
standing with this God by faith in his Son.

He Reigns Forever

Not only is our God called the everlasting Rock (Isaiah 26:4), but “the LORD is the true
God; he is the living God and the everlasting King” (Jeremiah 10:10). His kingdom is an
everlasting kingdom (Psalm 145:13; Daniel 4:3; 7:27), and his dominion an everlasting
dominion (Daniel 4:34; 7:14). When he exercises his strength and authority, he makes for
himself an everlasting name (Isaiah 63:12).

In his indomitable power and unflinching justice, he brings those who remain opposed to
him to everlasting ruin (Psalm 9:6), everlasting reproach (Isaiah 23:40), everlasting
contempt (Daniel 12:2), everlasting shame (Psalm 78:66), everlasting burnings (Isaiah
33:14), and an everlasting desolation (Jeremiah 25:9). It is a serious and horrifying thing
to be a sinner and to have broken his everlasting covenant (Isaiah 24:5).

Our Hope, Our Strong Deliverer

But as Psalm 103:17 acclaims, “the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to
everlasting” (Psalm 103:17). In love, he sent his Son, whose represents his Father and
“his name [is] called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of
Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). He embodied in human form his Father’s everlasting righteousness
(Daniel 9:24), and in his perfect life, death, and resurrection, he established a new
covenant with his church, which had been forecast again and again in the prophets as an
everlasting covenant (Psalm 105:10; Isaiah 55:3; 61:8; Jeremiah 32:40; 50:5; Ezekiel
16:60; 37:26).

For those who take refuge in the everlasting God through Jesus, he loves us with an
everlasting love (Isaiah 54:8; Jeremiah 31:3) and gives us an everlasting salvation (Isaiah
45:17) and everlasting joy (Isaiah 35:10; 51:11; 61:7) and everlasting life (Daniel 12:2).
In Jesus, God gives us his everlasting name (Isaiah 56:5) and holds us up with his
everlasting arms (Deuteronomy 33:27) and leads us in the way everlasting (Psalm
139:24).

And he is preparing for us a new creation in which,

The sun shall be no more your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon

give you light; but the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be

your glory. Your sun shall no more go down, nor your moon withdraw itself; for

the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your days of mourning shall be

ended. (Isaiah 60:19–20)

Defender, Comforter, Lifter

And so we can take great comfort in the arms of our everlasting God who “does not faint
or grow weary” (Isaiah 40:28). He is infinitely strong, and defends us in our weakness.
And he is infinitely resourceful and unmatched in mercy, and comforts us in our need.

While the everlasting God is more than we can fully understand or wrap our minds
around, it is a great comfort to know that the one on whom we wait for deliverance is
able to outlast any foe and overcome any threat to our everlasting joy. He is truly a God
worthy of our everlasting worship.
