None But Jesus

"There is no one else for me... None but Jesus."

That's a deceptively easy line to sing. Most of us know that we need God, and we know that life is better with Him. We have no problem singing that line! But that prayer, "there is no one else for me..." do we mean that? Is all of our hope in Him alone, or is it with a few other people too?

It's easy to put our hope in the gifts instead of the giver. For example, my wife is a massive part of the Lord's healing work and provision in my life. She is an absolute gift; kind, loving, and steady through all of my emotional chaos! But she can't fulfill all my hope like Jesus can.

I have also been blessed by many mentors who have taught and discipled me. "Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors, there is safety" Proverbs 11:14 (ESV). However, they only have so much wisdom and advice. But "who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been His counselor?" Romans 11:34-35 (ESV)

None but Jesus.

"For you have been my hope, Sovereign Lord,

my confidence since my youth.

From birth, I have relied on you;

you brought me forth from my mother's womb.

I will ever praise you.

I have become a sign to many;

you are my strong refuge.

My mouth is filled with your praise,

declaring your splendor all day long."

Psalm 71:5-8 (NIV)

"There is no one else for me

None but Jesus

Crucified to set me free

Now I live to bring Him praise."

There is only one source of hope that will never fail. One source of hope that has been faithful from the beginning. One confidence, unshaken, which we can rely on for all of our days. One goodness that is better than the best things in life. And because of Jesus' finished work on the cross, may our lives become "a sign to many" as we can't help but pour out praise for what He's done for us.

I never get tired of singing this song because it reminds me of something I know is true but is often easy to forget. There is truly no one else who is worthy. No one else can satisfy me. No one else is worthy of a life spent declaring praise.

None but Jesus.
