Worthy, You Are Worthy

“Then I looked, and I heard around the throne, and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea and all that is in them saying, “To Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!” Revelation 5:11-13

Worship is defined as ascribing ultimate value and worth to something (or someone) in such a way that engages and energizes our whole being and person. It is clear in God’s word that every human being created in the image of God longs to ascribe worth to something. It cannot be denied or contested that we were were fashioned for worship. We were made to have our hearts gripped and our attention arrested. This holy compelling is deeply woven into the fabric of our very being. It’s this constant pull within our hearts that is ultimately meant to draw us to God Himself. It comes as natural blinking and is as innate as breathing.

It’s happening every moment of every day, often times without us even realizing it. You don’t have to take that close of a look at our lives to see how generously we give our time, resources, and energy - our devotion itself to the things that we deem the most precious and the most valuable. Jesus describes this truth with profound precision in His sermon on the mount in Matthew 6, when He said “where your treasure is, there you heart will also be”. In the context of Matthew 6, Jesus was specifically talking about money but the truth can be applied to almost anything in life. While ascribing worth to things in our lives and relating to them accordingly doesn’t automatically equate to worship, there is often a very thin line that many genuine believers straddle day in and day out.

There is of course very real value and preciousness to every good and perfect gift that has been graciously given to us by the Father, but there is only one superior and glorious gift of God who is ultimately worthy of our worship; Jesus Christ. He is worthy of our utmost affection, our most extravagant devotion, and our sacrificial obedience because His own life was sacrificed for ours. There is nothing or no one else in all creation that holds that kind of weight. In Revelation 5, we are given a glimpse into a culminating moment in history where around God’s throne Jesus is declared to be the only one found worthy to execute God’s judgment on the earth. We see Him at the center of God’s plan to ultimately destroy darkness and bring redemption and restoration to the world. He is the Lamb of God declared worthy because He was slain and with His own blood He ransomed sinners and reconciled them to God.

For the believer, there is no more precious possession in all the earth than the gift of Jesus Himself. Paul understood the preciousness of Christ when he counted all else as loss compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Jesus. I am fully convince that the more we comprehend the incomparable worth of Christ, the more our lives of worship will be the fragrance that draws those around us to Him. Let us be those who not only sing of the worth of Christ but whose very lives declare that He is indeed a treasure worthy of every ounce of our hearts devotion both now and for all of eternity.
